In an interview with EFY bureau, Sanket Patel, Marketing & Business Development Director, Glide Technology, talks about future of IoT, India’s IoT ecosystem, evolution of IoT solutions and much more.

Glide Technology Pvt. Ltd. is an innovative embedded software and hardware solutions provider with a seamless and process-oriented approach to product design across various industries such as IoT, wearables, automation and healthcare. The company has been a part of many client success stories while delivering innovative embedded and IoT products through next-gen technologies.

Excerpts:

Q. In your opinion, which are the top 3 industries that are utilising the IoT capabilities? How are they influencing the future of IoT?

Drive, Wear and Stay with IoT products. The automotive, wearables and home IoT devices are shaping the future of connected world around us. In the automotive industry, our vehicles are equipped with advanced sensors and technologies which significantly deliver better consumer experience and insightful data. Wearable devices are changing the health, fitness and entertainment industry by adopting advancement of sensor technologies and increasing use of IoT connectivity. Automating processes in home and connecting each home appliances to IoT network make consumers’ lives easier. These IoT technologies enable consumers to achieve more things with less intervention in their day-to-day activities.

Q. Between the cellular and NB-IoT/LPWA families of wireless technologies – which one are you betting upon? Why?

Emerging standards such as NB-IoT will be the next big thing and it will be applied in many consumer and industry use cases. Global mobile operators have already adopted the technology and Indian telecom companies are planning to deploy the NB-IoT technology in 2019. Whether you are working on industrial IoT products or consumer IoT products, NB-IoT will help to eliminate dependency on WiFi networks. It will give robust connectivity for IoT devices placed in remote locations for data capturing as well as automation needs.

 Q. How ready is India’s tech eco-system to develop and deploy IoT solutions?

Initiatives by Indian government such as Digital India, Make in India and Smart Cities Mission are helping to develop the IoT ecosystem for enterprises and startups in the country. Start-ups are also coming up with innovative solutions in the space of GreenTech, Smart Agriculture, Smart Cities, Industrial IoT and Connected Healthcare. Tech eco-system is also evolving around the availability of vendors, faster delivery of components and quality prototyping.

Q. Do you foresee India’s tech industry developing its own IP and branded products/solutions in the IoT arena?

On my recent visit to CES 2019, the largest consumer electronics show in the world, I came across a lot of Indian branded products in IoT domain, specifically in industrial automation, home automation, healthcare and wearables verticals. India has also a few IoT firms who developed their own IP and are currently creating products solving many business challenges. In the near future, I expect more and more start-ups to come up with products and solutions designed in India and made for India as well as global market. At Glide Technology, we help such start-ups with electronics product design services and help develop the IP for them as well.

Q. How do you see the role, technologies like AI/ML will play in the evolution of IoT solutions?

Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and IoT are actually creating intelligent ecosystem. AI/ML is redefining the EdTech, healthcare, robotics and gaming industry. IoT is all about data capturing and data processing from the sensors in the machines, whereas AI can add a layer on top of it to make those machines think and behave like humans. Thus, combination of AI and IoT will eventually solve our day-to-day problems, without human intervention.

Q. What are the key technologies missing, which when made available, will accelerate adoption of IoT across the globe?

Technology standards and security will be major concerns in the adoption of IoT products. As Gartner predicts, by 2020, more than 20 billion ‘things’ will be connected to the Internet. There will be major concern on implementation of security protocols with growing demand for these connected things in 2020. There are multiple IoT technology standards implemented for products, but they are lacking in the field of authentication and authorisation. These two challenges will be key deciding factors when it comes to accelerating the adoption of IoT solutions across the globe.
